In preparation for the Military History Carnival coming to the APB, I thought I'd offer a military picture for you to figure out. You should be able to easily figure out the era and then its just a matter of narrowing it down.

You are in the right period - this is a Civil War soldier, but it isn't Hayes either.
This man started as a Lieutenant and left as a General. My big clue is that this man was with Sherman's army when Atlanta fell.
