Poll: Which 19th century American President was the most responsible for starting a war?

The poll has closed for the question, "Which 19th century American President was the most responsible for starting a war?" Thanks to all who participated by voting.

President Polk came in first for the Mexican War with 47%. President Lincoln was second for the American Civil War with 18%. President Madison and the War of 1812 was a close third with 17%. Coming in as a close fourth was President McKinley and the Spanish-American War.

I don't agree that Lincoln started the Civil War. Perhaps his election started it, but he did not start it himself. Fort Sumter was attacked by Confederate forces. U.S. troops did not fire the first shots.
