Presidential Meeting

President-Elect Obama and President Bush met with all the living former Presidents today for lunch. What a historic meeting and definitely one most of us would love to have listened in on! Thanks for Greg for reminding me to post this.

I've been trying to find info on whether this is the largest gathering of U.S. Presidents in history. Perhaps Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe were all together once....Any ideas?

Notice how Jimmy Carter is not as close to Bill Clinton as the rest of the group is standing. It is known that Clinton hates Carter. It dates from 1980 when Clinton felt that policies of the Carter administration caused Clinton to lose his 1980 re-election as governor of Arkansas. You can find more on this situation in this story by Carol Felsenthal at the Huffington Post.

Great to see the top US leadership of present and past gathering together. I hope Obama would live up to his promises and give Americans a better future and prosperous economy. A strong and devoted President with lot of hopes already in the hearts of the people of this world, I congratulate Mr. Obama on achieving this great Milestone.

It is my wish that he may kick back the allegations leveled against him by calling him American Gorbachev. He will not let down the People of America and around the world. He should adopt the approach of providing justice to the humanity especially to the helpless people of Palestine

I hope Mr. Obama would work with full sincerity to get the economy out of the claws of a hidden enemy who used American blood for its own reason and safety. Americans must understand that and help the new President in bringing America out of the bushes...

Best wishes to all

I believe the largest gathering of living U.S. presidents was at the services for a dead one: Nixon's funeral:

In order from right to left, by year of presidency - Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton along with their wives.
The photo on this blog has only four presidents - Obama was not yet sworn in.

So, before Nixon's death, there were five ex-presidents and one current (Clinton). Then 5+1 again when GWB was inaugurated. Then Reagan and Ford passed; there may have been 4+1 at Reagan's funeral.
During Lincoln's first inauguration, there were also 5 ex's:
John Tyler, Jr. (March 29, 1790 – January 18, 1862)
James Buchanan (April 23, 1791 – June 1, 1868)
Millard Fillmore (January 7, 1800 – March 8, 1874)
Franklin Pierce, Sr. (November 23, 1804 – October 8, 1869)
Martin Van Buren (December 5, 1782 – July 24, 1862)
