It looks a little like Lucy Hayes, but I am not certain

Not Lucy Hayes - somewhat earlier.

I think that's Margaret "Peggy" Taylor, wife of Zachary Taylor, the 12th President of the United States.

mary elizabeth taylor bliss

Okay the last two guesses are the really the same. There is no extant picture of Peggy Taylor - if you see one, it is actually her daughter, Betty Bliss. This is not Betty Bliss but it IS a White House hostess.

Varina Howell Davis

No, this isn't Varina Davis, the FL of the Confederacy.

Ellen Arthur??

No wait, Ellen Arthur died before Chester Arthur became President....Hmmm....Harriet Lane?

Mary Todd perhaps? I'm grabbing straws here...

No, not Ellen Arthur (who was dead by the time Arthur was President as you remembered). Harriet Lane is closer (although not correct) as this is a hostess, not a First Lady (so not a wife). Because of that hint, it isn't Mary Lincoln either.

I think I've finally got a hard one!

It looks a little like Margaret "Peg" Eaton, of Jacksononian scandal fame. But, If we're going with first ladies, I'm going to guess... hmmm... Abigail Fillmore?

Jennie W said...

Peggy Eaton...she might rate a post here...good idea! But this isn't her.

Okay, Brian is very close...it isn't Abigail Fillmore, but IS someone related to her. Mrs. Fillmore was ill, so she had a stand in hostess for awhile...who was it?

Okay, through process of elimination I think I've got it. It's the young Mary Abigail Fillmore, who stood in as White House hostess due to her mother's illness.

Jennie W said...

Yes, you've got it! It's Mary Abigail "Abbie" Fillmore. I'll be posting on her later this week.

That was my next guess!! ;-( Oh, well...
