Socks, Presidential Cat, Dies

Socks, the White House cat of the Clinton Administration, has died. Details can be found at Socks, former Clinton cat, put to sleep.

Taking politics aside (can it be done with the presidency?), I was a fan of Socks. I have two baby kitties (ages 15 and 16 I think), and I have always enjoyed the press reports of Socks. Maybe Clinton was or was not a good President but Socks was a great First Cat!

The site notes:

Socks, the cat who won international fame during his years in the Clinton White House, was euthanized Friday after months of treatment for cancer.

Socks was adopted by Chelsea Clinton when her father was governor of Arkansas.

Socks, who was born in 1989, was put to sleep about 10 a.m. at Three Notch Veterinary Clinic in Hollywood, Maryland, said veterinary assistant Rae Dera. Veterinarians say he was probably either 19 or 20 years old.

The cat had been losing weight since November and had been treated at the clinic, Dera said. He had been suffering from a cancer in his mouth and jaw.

The CNN article also notes:

The black-and-white feline was a fixture at the White House during the Clintons' eight-year run. He was often photographed on the president's shoulder and was given free rein of the presidential residence -- showing up in photos in the Oval Office and White House press briefing room.

He had his own online fan club, appeared at animal charity events and was one of the subjects of now-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's book, "Dear Socks, Dear Buddy: Kids' Letters to the First Pets."

I wonder if Socks had his own Secret Service agent? Rest in Peace Socks. You lived a good life.

Some additional facts gleaned from other news articles:

The Clintons adopted Socks as a stray while Bill Clinton was governor in Arkansas. They did not know how old Socks was but it was suspected that he was 19-20 years old.

During the Clinton's eight years of the White House, Socks had complete run of the building with the exception of the lower, more secure, levels. Socks was not known to walk into areas with large crowds, but had walked in on a few heads of state in the Oval Office.

Socks was living with Betty Curie, Clinton's former secretary, since leaving the White House.

When Bill Clinton got Buddy, Socks was not pleased. While Buddy tried to play nice with Socks, but Socks wanted nothing to do with Buddy. Because Bill was attached to Buddy and Chelsea could not take Socks with her, Socks went to live with Betty Curie at the end of the Clinton administration in 2001.

Socks and Buddy had higher approval ratings than President Clinton. I can see that!!
