I just wanted to follow up my guessing game from last week with a quick explanation.
We tend to think about men who were Presidents after the Civil War when thinking about Civil War service, but Millard Fillmore actually technically served in the Civil War after his presidency. Fillmore organized the Union Continentals, a home guard for his town of Buffalo, for men over 45. Fillmore held the rank of a major in this group. Not active in fighting, the group did ceremonial duties in Buffalo, such as helping with funerals for Buffalo’s fallen soldiers and having patriotic parades.
