I found this neat lesson plan on The President's Powers. It is geared towards grades 8-12 but I think this could be used at the collegiate level.
The student sheet which comes with the lesson plan has the following:
You will use the Internet to gather information that will help you answer the following questions in an essay:
1. How much power and privilege should a president have within the federal government?
2. How literally should the president take his roles in the Constitution? Should he be allowed to perform more duties than the Constitution spells out? Why or why not?
3. Should the president have more privileges than an average citizen? Why or why not?
It is amazing how often these same questions are being asked today. I guess that is good for the American democracy. The ways American Presidents esercise their powers has changed a great deal over the last several centuries.
